Funding Hope for Vulnerable Animals: Margaret's Dream Becomes Reality

For many years, Margaret had a dream – to create a sustainable way of raising funds to help abused, abandoned, and vulnerable animals. In November 2024, that dream became a reality when she opened Beniganim Vintage, a charity vintage shop in the village of Beniganim, near Xàtiva in Valencia, Spain.

The shop started life in a small premises on a side road, away from the main flow of passing traffic. With just five or six dedicated volunteers helping her, Margaret began building what would become a thriving community project supporting animal rescue and welfare.

Although Margaret knew the location was not ideal, she was determined to make the venture succeed. Gradually, word spread about the excellent quality, value, and variety of the pre-loved clothing, accessories, collectables, and household items available in the shop.

Just a few months later, exciting news arrived. A much larger shop on Beniganim's main road, directly opposite the Mas y Mas supermarket, was becoming available. With its huge display windows and spacious interior, it was the perfect opportunity for Beniganim Vintage to grow.

A Bigger Shop for a Bigger Mission

With patience and determination, Margaret overcame the many challenges involved in relocating the business.

On 17 May 2025, the original shop closed its doors and preparations began for the move. Margaret, her husband Mike, and a team of volunteers worked tirelessly transporting stock, assembling new display units, and preparing the new premises.

Boxes of freshly laundered pre-loved clothing were unpacked and displayed on rails. Collectables, bric-a-brac, and homeware found their place on newly installed shelves. New signage was fitted, and on 24 May 2025 the new Beniganim Vintage officially opened for business.

Supporting Animal Rescue Through Sustainable Fashion

Since moving to its larger premises, Beniganim Vintage has gone from strength to strength.

The additional space allowed the shop to expand its range and include furniture, which quickly became a popular attraction for customers. The clothing rails were equally successful, with shoppers delighted to discover quality items, including designer labels, at remarkably affordable prices.

As the shop grew, so did the volunteer team. Each person found their own way to contribute, whether through window displays, customer service, sorting donations, transporting furniture, or helping behind the scenes.

The local community, initially curious about the project, soon recognised what a valuable asset the shop had become. Today, Beniganim Vintage enjoys strong support from local residents who understand that every purchase helps support vulnerable animals.

Support from local groups

One of the many community groups supporting Beniganim Vintage is the wonderful "Ladies of Spain."

Each week, women from Xàtiva and surrounding Valencian towns meet for coffee, conversation, and friendship. A collection tin is always present, and members donate their spare change throughout the year.

The group regularly votes on local charities to support, with animal rescue causes proving especially popular. Shortly after Beniganim Vintage opened, the organisation was selected as one of the group's beneficiaries.

Margaret was delighted to receive the donation on behalf of the animals who benefit from the shop's fundraising efforts.

Rescue Animals Can Benefit from Your Birthday Too!

In January, Margaret celebrated a very special birthday with friends, family, and volunteers at a local restaurant.

However, there was one important instruction: no traditional presents.

Instead, Margaret asked guests to bring donations that would directly help rescue animals, including dog food, cat food, treats, toys, and other useful supplies.

The response was incredible.

By the end of the celebration, Margaret was surrounded by gifts that would make a real difference to the lives of rescued dogs and cats in need.

The event demonstrated how even a birthday celebration can become an opportunity to support animal welfare and help rescue organisations continue their vital work.

How You Can Help

Every purchase, donation, and act of support helps Beniganim Vintage continue its mission of raising funds for vulnerable animals.

By choosing sustainable fashion, donating quality pre-loved items, volunteering your time, or simply visiting the shop, you can help provide food, veterinary care, shelter, and hope for animals that desperately need it.

Together, we can give vulnerable animals the second chance they deserve.

A VOLUNTEER'S RESCUE STORY

Hi, I'm Anne.

My rescue story begins with Hattie the Cattie.  Actually, it really started with Bert the Snert, but that's another story to be told another day.

We were living in the middle of the countryside just outside Nashville, Tennessee and my daughter who was always bringing home things like baby girds to raise, came home and told me that she'd seen a very small short tailed cat in the ditch across the lane from the house.
